Regulatory Milestone: Urine Diverting Toilets Now Approved in Queensland!

The Plumbing and Drainage Amendment Regulation (No. 2) 2025 is now officially in force in Queensland, marking a major step forward for sustainable sanitation and nutrient recovery. The amendment incorporates provisions for Urine Diverting Toilets (UDTs) into the Plumbing and Drainage Regulation 2019, enabling their installation as part of approved trials.

This change unlocks new possibilities for:

  • 🌱 Innovative resource recovery

  • 💧 Water-smart urban design

  • 🔄 Decentralised nutrient management

It paves the way for research and pilot projects that were previously restricted by regulatory barriers—allowing installations in non-residential areas across participating councils including Brisbane, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim, and Somerset

A huge thank you to the Queensland Government, Gerard and his team, and everyone at Urban Utilities who contributed to making this possible. Your work is helping shape a more circular and sustainable future for urban infrastructure.
